Meet the eco hero whose one-man mission to save a rainforest led to a pioneering way of protecting endangered forests.
Natural Capital Alliance (NCA) is a grassroots movement developed to protect endangered ecosystems by connecting eco heroes with capital. NCA’s first eco hero is Todd Lemons, who pioneered the first deforestation accounting methodology, now the UN-supported REDD+ (“Reduced Emissions from avoided Deforestation & forest Degradation”) program.
Against all odds, Todd managed to save a precious 65k hectare ecosystem deforestation in 2012, when his Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve became the first REDD+ project to be approved in Indonesia. “Rimba Raya” means “Infinite Forest,” and Todd’s company, InfiniteEARTH, has worked with the local community to introduce sustainable forestry, build schools and hospitals, while also supporting a critical orangutan sanctuary. The reserve is about the size of Singapore, and home to over 300 species of birds, 180 species of trees, 122 species of mammals including endangered orangutans, clouded leopards, gibbons, proboscis monkeys and sun bears. Rimba Raya is one of only four global REDD+ projects to achieve a triple gold CCB rating for Climate, Community & Biodiversity benefits. Allianz, Microsoft, & NTT are among the firms that purchase Rimba Raya REDD+ credits, which keeps this precious ecosystem alive.
This year, Wonderfruit is offsetting its carbon emissions by investing in Rimba Raya too.
