Pattaya, Thailand, 2 August 2017 – Wonderfruit, Thailand’s pioneering, sustainable, cross-cultural, live celebration of the arts, music and ideas returns for its fourth year, leading its preview of the first phase line-up with a ground-breaking announcement about its ongoing sustainability initiatives. Where barefoot luxury meets awe-inspiring architecture and natural adventures, Wonderfruit is far from your average music festival and Wonderers from all over the world are invited to return to the beautiful Thai countryside for the ultimate destination retreat from 14-17 December 2017. Phase one tickets are on sale now.
Following previous years’ pioneering eco-friendly initiatives, including making the event carbon positive and planting a mangrove tree in Myanmar for every “Mangrove Drink” sold, Wonderfruit announces a new and game-changing scheme for 2017. For this December’s iteration, there are plans to pay selected artists and collaborators in TREE tokens, a cryptocurrency backed by natural capital and traded on the blockchain.
Scratch First, the organizers behind Wonderfruit announce the first names from the music line-up, led by veteran techno DJ RICHIE HAWTIN and British hip hop artist ROOTS MANUVA, who will perform with a full band. Hailing from Texas, psychedelic trio KHRUANGBIN will delight crowds with their Thai Molam-inspired sound, while Brazilian house legend GUI BORATTO will light up legendary after-hours destination, The Quarry. Lending a local Thai flavor to the soundscape in The Fields will be KHUN NARIN AND HIS ELECTRIC PHIN BAND and Wonderers will also be treated to the soulful stylings of English songstress IZZY BIZU. In addition, NICOLA CRUZ from Ecuador and Danish techno maverick BE SVENDSEN join Hawtin and Boratto on the DJ roster. With a line-up that spans the musical spectrum, Wonderfruit will confirm more acts in the coming months. Meanwhile, demo submissions will soon be open for bands and artists hoping to be selected for Intermission – Wonderfruit’s initiative to mentor and provide a platform for unsigned talent to perform on the main stage.
Wonderfruit is built on six pillars: Arts, Music, Family, Farm to Feasts, Talks & Workshops and Wellness & Adventures, all of which are informed by its ethos to use the event as a platform to catalyze meaningful and positive impact. Scratch Talks returns with a line up of speakers guaranteed to inspire and galvanize festival goers. Author of best-selling book “Zero Waste Home”, Bea Johnson will share how she and her family produce a mere pint of trash a year. Dr. Singh Intrachooto from Bangkok’s Kasetsart University, who was recently named one of Asia’s Green Game-changers, and the founder of Folkrice – Anukool Saibejra will reveal their eco-friendly initiatives.
Ensuring Wonderers are suitably satisfied, a number of culinary favorites make a welcome return to The Fields in December. Morimoto Bangkok will be on hand with award-winning sushi and sake, and notorious party spot Straight Outta Thonglor will keep the tunes, dishes and drinks flowing throughout. Thai street food will be on hand from local vendors including the Clean Food Caravan, and besides manning their pop up natural food station, Thailand Young Farmers have already begun an exciting overhaul at the heart of the site: The FARMacy will act as a dispensary of natural organic and homegrown remedies, to keep Wonderers happy and healthy.
Wonderfruit’s artistic marvels set the scene and create an unforgettable landscape. The stunning Solar Stage by Gregg Fleishman gets a makeover for December, while Marvel’s Adam Pollina turns his creative design talents to The Quarry. Installations to look out for include a biomorphic alien creation by Filipino artist-designer Leeroy New and an interactive sculptural representation of Punyisa Silparassamee’s childhood Chinese dragon festival toy, while California-based multi-disciplinary artist, Tigre Bailando creates a sanctuary of discovery and healing.
Among the wellness experts ensuring Wonderers stay aligned and balanced are yogi Rosemary Vandenbroucke from Hong Kong and Martha Collard, whose soothing gong baths will be back by popular demand. The kids will be kept well occupied, meanwhile, at dedicated family-friendly venue Camp Wonder, where fun and games include explorations into the insect world with Buglife and storytelling with Anna Manuel of Heads & Tales. Wonderers can look forward to the full complement of interactive, visual and culinary marvels, not to mention unique activities for all ages – to be announced shortly.
Wonderfruit takes place from 14 to 17 December in The Fields at Siam Country Club, just 150 kilometers (two hours’ drive) southeast of Bangkok. Phase one ticket pricing begins at US$147 (THB5,000 or £115) for an adult 4-day pass, which includes general camping.
